Quotes by Universalists

"Deep within us all there is an amazing inner sanctuary of the soul, a holy place, a Divine Center"
Thomas Kelly

(quoted in Streams of Living Water by Richard Foster)

"Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God's house, all human
beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person claim his or her own way to God."
Henri Nouwen

If only they [people] could all see themselves as they really are ... I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other ... At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusions, a point of pure truth ... This little point ...is the pure glory of God in us. It is in everybody.
Thomas Merton

"We need to become aware of the Cosmic Christ, which means recognizing that every being has within it the light of Christ." Matthew Fox

*'[T]he soul of the human family is the Holy Spirit.'
Basil Pennington

*' I saw that God is in all things
Julian of Norwich'

*'My beloved [God] is the high mountains, and the lovely valley forests, unexplored islands, rushing rivers'
John of the Cross

*' Here [the contemplative state] everything is God. God is everywhere and in all things.'
Madame Guyon

Contemplative Spirituality: A belief system that uses ancient mystical practices to induce altered states of consciousness (the silence) and is rooted in mysticism and the occult but often wrapped in Christian terminology. The premise of contemplative spirituality is pantheistic (God is all) and panentheistic (God is in all). Common terms used for this movement are "spiritual formation," "the silence," "the stillness," "ancient-wisdom," "spiritual disciplines," and many others.

Spiritual Formation: A movement that has provided a platform and a channel through which contemplative prayer is entering the church. Find spiritual formation being used, and in nearly every case you will find contemplative spirituality. In fact, contemplative spirituality is the heartbeat of the spiritual formation movement.
